Temple Gate

Ukiyo-e "One Hundred Views of Naniwa"

Statue of Vaisravana

Urae Shoten Temple in the season of the Ume flower blooming

Main Temple

The official name is Nyoizan Ryokuin. It is located at Sagisu 2-14-1, Fukushima-Ku, Osaka-City, Osaka-Prefecture.

It is about a 5-minute walk from JR

Fukushima Station.

It is from Wikipedia; Records are lost due to the old-time flood, and the year of construction is unknown.

In March of the 1st year of Genbun era (1736), Yui Shonin as a Buddhist priest of Zenju-in had come and attempted to rebuild it, and it was completed in October of the 4th year of the Genbun era (1739).

After that, when it was declining again,a Buddhist priest rebuilt this temple in 1834.

Here is the prayer place of Fushimi-no-miya from ancient times, the principal image of worship at the temple is Eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu (Great Holy Kankiten) in the main hall.

They have been said that this Great Holy Kankiten emerged from the sea on a fisherman's net when Urae area was still on the coast in ancient time.

The Belief for wishing a childbirth and marriage, they have said as "Urae Shoten" or "Fukushima Shoten".

Several waterways flowed into the area, and the waterside of the temple precincts was crowded with rabbitear iris, and during the flowering season, it was full of worshipers.

Slab with a haiku cut on it of Matsuo Basho

Matsuo Basho (Famous Haiku poet: 1644 - 1694) also has visited with his apprentice and left a haiku.

"kakitsubata / kataru mo tabi no / hitotsu kana" (1688 summer)

It was destroyed by fire in the second Osaka air raid on June 1, 1945, except for Temple Gate and Shirahige Inari Shrine, but it was reconstructed after the war.

It has not been damaged by the so-called Haibutsu Kishaku (slogan of anti-Buddhist movement) in early Meiji Era (1868 - 1877), and has been preserved in the traditional Japanese religious form of Shinbutsu-shugo (Syncretization of Shinto with Buddhism).

Ukiyo-e "One Hundred Views of Naniwa"

From the Ukiyo-e "One Hundred Views of Naniwa" at the end of the Edo era, it was very crowded at that time with gathering faith.

When I talked to a chief temple priest, it seems that there are various difficulties in nowadays.

Bell-tower of temple

It seemed that enthusiastic believers were always come to praying. It was a place for prayer with the votive light and cleanliness.

Pond of Saraswati

It was a very interrested place for me as have a Japanese Traditional religious belief and interest, where enshrines many Buddhas and Shinto gods in addition to the principal image.

I thank you for all people of this temple.
